How it all started
I come from an entrepreneurial family. But it actually started with my grandfather. He was a true entrepreneur, he had a cab company, a gas station and real estate. This entrepreneurial spirit did not immediately manifest itself in me starting my own business. I set my goals on motocross, because my uncle also did it professionally. But because my parents did not want to contribute to the costs, I decided at seventeen that I wanted to become a kickboxing champion. At that time - the 90s - that was only possible in Amsterdam. So I left home.
To the point
My trainer was clear after my first training session: I had absolutely no talent, but I had something in me that made him think it was still worth a try. I had perseverance. They could knock me down, but I always got back up. In that sense, life is a kickboxing match. Time after time you get knocked down, you have to get back up and keep going. Everyone goes through that in their own way.
Overcome
I eventually made it to a decent level in kickboxing. It used to disappoint me at times that I never reached a higher level, but now I see the positive power of that. I was able to overcome a lot because I did that sport and fought to achieve my goals. I didn't always choose the easiest path and in the end, thanks to my trainer at the time and discipline, things worked out.
